The Porcellio laevis “Milkback” are woodlice highly valued in bioactive terrariums for their efficiency and ease of care. They help break down organic waste (dead leaves, decaying wood, food scraps, small molds) and contribute to keeping the substrate cleaner and more stable.
This generally active and quite visible species is perfect for quickly establishing a colony in a well-fed bioactive terrarium, with a good leaf litter and a moisture gradient.

Quantity: 15
Highlights
- Species very robust and easy to maintain
- Good “cleanup crew”: consumes plant debris, decomposing matter, and small molds
- Often very prolific if humidity and food are adequate
- Quite visible and interesting to observe
- Excellent choice to start a bioactive microfauna
Tips & Parameters
-
Humidity: medium (they like a moist area but need a drier zone).
- Tip: maintain a gradient (a moist zone + a drier zone).
- Temperature: around 20–27°C (faster reproduction in warm and stable conditions).
-
Food:
- continuous leaf litter (base)
- supplements: vegetable pieces, La Swamp woodlouse food, etc. (in small amounts)
- Calcium: always have a source available (cuttlefish bone, calcium, well-dried eggshells, etc.)
- Warning: Porcellio laevis can become very greedy and multiply quickly: avoid overfeeding (mold/mites) and always keep decomposing leaves/wood available. If you have very tender plants, make sure there is enough base food.
