Mangosteen leaves (Garcinia mangostana) are a highly valued tropical botanical for natural/blackwater aquariums and bioactive terrariums. They are often chosen for their good durability (slow to moderate decomposition) and for releasing tannins that help create slightly amber water and a more “biotope” atmosphere.
In aquariums, they become an excellent support for biofilm (grazing surface for shrimp and snails) and provide hiding spots on the substrate for microfauna, fry, and shyer species. In terrariums, they enrich the litter, create microhabitats, and feed the living cycle as they gradually decompose.
Format
- Net weight: 1.5 oz
Highlights
- 100% natural (possible size/color variations)
- Tropical leaf with good durability : long-lasting litter
- In aquarium: tannins + excellent support for biofilm
- Provides hiding spots and resting areas (shrimp, fry, microfauna)
- In terrarium: litter + microhabitats + food for microfauna
Usage (terrarium)
- Place the leaves on the surface of the substrate to create a litter layer.
- Layer them to increase hiding spots and humid zones.
- In bioactive setups: let the microfauna do the work; replace/add as needed.
Usage (aquarium)
- Rinse quickly.
- Optional: pre-soak for 12–24 hours (or quick boil for 1–2 minutes) to help them sink faster and control initial coloration.
