Product description

The cacao leaves (Theobroma cacao) are a premium tropical botanical, very popular in natural/blackwater aquariums and bioactive terrariums. They are known for being durable (slow decomposition) and for releasing generally low to moderate tannins depending on the dosage, which allows for a more natural ambiance without darkening the water too quickly.
In aquariums, they quickly become an excellent support for biofilm (grazing surface) and can also provide hiding spots for shrimp, fry, and microfauna. In terrariums, they enrich the substrate, create microhabitats, and feed the living cycle as they decompose.

Format

  • Net weight: 1 oz

Highlights

  • 100% natural (possible size/color variations)
  • Durable leaf : good integrity, gradual decomposition
  • In aquarium: support for biofilm + natural ambiance (tannins often low to moderate)
  • Useful for shrimp/snails and “natural” tanks
  • In terrarium: substrate + microhabitats + food for microfauna

Usage (terrarium)

  • Place the leaves on the surface of the substrate to create a litter layer.
  • Layer them to increase hiding spots and humid areas.
  • Replace/add when the leaves are well decomposed.

Usage (aquarium)

  • Rinse quickly.
  • Optional:  pre-soak for 12–24 hours (or quick boil for 1–2 minutes) to help them sink faster and control initial coloration.
