Avocado leaves (Persea americana) are an interesting natural botanical for creating a rich, “tropical” leaf litter, both in bioactive terrariums and natural aquariums. They gradually decompose, become a good support for microfauna (terrarium) and biofilm (aquarium), and can release tannins that contribute to a more natural ambiance (slightly amber water depending on dosage).
In aquariums, they also provide hiding spots and resting areas, especially appreciated by shrimp, snails, fry, and shy fish. In terrariums, they add structure to the soil and nourish the living cycle over time.
Format
- Net weight: 0.5 oz
Highlights
- 100% natural (possible size/color variations)
- In terrariums: litter + micro-habitats + food for microfauna
- In aquariums: support for biofilm + tannins (effect varies by amount)
- Helps create a natural “tropical forest” style decor
- Progressive decomposition: lasting benefits
Usage (terrarium)
- Place the leaves on the surface of the substrate to create a litter layer.
- Layer them to increase hiding spots and humid zones.
- In bioactive setups: let the microfauna do the work; replace/add as needed.
Usage (aquarium)
- Rinse the leaves quickly.
- Optional: pre-soak 12–24 hours (or quick boil 1–2 minutes) to help them sink faster and control initial coloration.
