The Cubaris murina (“Little Sea”) are highly valued isopods in bioactive terrariums, appreciated both for their efficiency and their interesting behavior. They help break down organic waste (dead leaves, decaying wood, food scraps) and contribute to keeping the substrate cleaner and more stable.
They often stay under hides and in leaf litter, and perform very well in terrariums with good humidity while maintaining a drier area for the gradient.

Highlights
- Good “cleanup crew”: consumes plant debris and decomposing matter
- Highly appreciated species in bioactive setups and breeding
- Interesting behavior and generally quite active under hides
- Well suited for tropical/semi-tropical terrariums with a humidity gradient
- Can roll into a ball (typical “rolly polly” behavior)
Care & Parameters
-
Humidity: medium to high (they like a good humid area but need a drier zone).
- Tip: maintain a gradient (a humid zone + a drier zone).
- Temperature: around 22–27°C (more stable breeding in warm, consistent conditions).
-
Food:
- continuous leaf litter (base diet)
- supplements: vegetable pieces, La Swamp isopod food, etc. (in small amounts)
- Calcium: always have a source available (cuttlefish bone, calcium, well-dried eggshells, etc.)
- Warning: avoid continuously soggy substrate. Proper ventilation + feeding in small amounts helps limit mold and mites.
