🧠 The science minute: Did you know that woodlice are not insects? They are actually terrestrial crustaceans! They are therefore much more closely related to shrimp, crabs, and crayfish than to ants or beetles that share their soil.
✨ Their 5 superpowers for your ecosystem:
1️⃣ 🪵 Intensive cleaning: They actively consume feces, decomposing plants, dead wood, and deceased feeder insects that your pet might have missed. They quickly transform this raw waste into nutrients that your plants and fungi can absorb.
2️⃣ 🧪 Nutrient mixing: Not only do they break down organic matter, but they also spread it throughout the substrate thanks to their constant movement, keeping your habitat healthy and balanced.
3️⃣ 🪴 Soil aeration: By digging micro-tunnels, they create essential air pockets in the substrate. This promotes root development for your plants and prevents the soil from becoming waterlogged or compacted.
4️⃣ 💩 A natural fertilizer of choice: What goes in must come out! Woodlice droppings are an exceptionally high-quality fertilizer that stimulates vigorous plant growth.
5️⃣ 🥚 Pest control: They naturally attack the eggs of several unwanted parasites and mites. Rest assured: they will never touch the eggs of your reptiles or amphibians, but they do an excellent microscopic filtration job!
